More Than Just Finding Words - It's a True-Crime Procedural

A standard word search just asks you to circle words on a list. A murder mystery word search puts you directly in the shoes of a homicide detective.

Welcome to the Bayside Police Department, circa 1980-something. Your desk is piled high with unsolved cold cases, the mayor is having a cow, and the brass wants answers. In these unique, logic-based printable puzzles, you aren't just crossing off words. You are actively analyzing crime scenes, tracking sketchy suspects, bagging the murder weapon, and uncovering the exact location where the crime went down.

Are your detective skills sharp enough to close the case?

Precinct Standard Operating Procedure: How to Play

Each case file in your free download is a mess. It contains reports from four different crime scenes. Buried in the static of those four word search grids, you will find six pieces of evidence and six suspects. Here is how you solve the mystery:

1. Scour the Scenes Get your eyes on the four grids. Track down all six pieces of evidence and all six suspects. Keep in mind, these creeps get around—every single one of them is hiding out in two different scenes. Mark them off your hard copy.

2. Spot the Weapon Look closely at your evidence log. Exactly one of those items is going to show up in two different scenes instead of just one. That repeated object? That’s your murder weapon. Bag it and tag it.

3. Corner the Killer Now that you have the weapon, look at the two specific scenes where you found it. Cross-reference your Rolodex of suspects. Only one perp was bold enough to show their face in both of those weapon locations. Slap the cuffs on them—that is your killer.

4. Decode the Victim You will see some letters circled by the lab geeks in forensics. Ignore any circles that fall inside the words you’ve already crossed off. Take the leftover circled letters and unscramble them. That anagram will spell out the name of the poor sap who took the fall.

5. Pin the Location We know who bought the farm, but we need to know where. Take the victim’s name you just decoded and hunt for it inside the grids. Whichever scene that name turns up in is exactly where the crime took place. Take it to the bank.

What's Inside Your Free "Search & Solve" Dossier?

When you claim your free printable PDF, you will receive three distinct micro-cases pulled straight from the '80s archives:

  • The Original Summer Case: A classic boardwalk mystery to warm up your detective skills.

  • The Halloween Disturbance: A messy October crime scene where the costumes make it hard to identify the suspect.

  • The Holiday Freeze: A cold-blooded crime at the local Christmas market.

Warning: Internal Affairs suspects someone has been tampering with these specific files. Do what you can with what’s left.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a murder mystery word search different from a regular word search? Unlike traditional word searches where you passively find a list of words, a murder mystery word search integrates logic and deduction. You have to cross-reference where specific words (suspects and evidence) intersect across multiple puzzle grids to determine the killer, the weapon, and the location of the crime.

Do I need to print these puzzles to solve them? Yes, it is highly recommended! These puzzles are designed to be printed. You will need a pen or highlighter to cross off suspects, circle evidence, and take notes as you deduce the solution.

Are these puzzles good for adults or teens? Absolutely. The Search & Solve series is perfect for true crime fans, adults, and older teens who love a mental challenge, escape rooms, or logic puzzles.

Are there seasonal murder mystery word searches available? Yes! Your free download includes a sneak peek at both our Halloween and Christmas-themed case files.
